Today more people are traveling than every before. In fact the estimates of tourists alone (not counting people traveling for business purposes) is at about a million people per year. This is a lot of people, and for most travelers, the desire to stay in communication with family, friends, and the office, is quite tantalizing. For this reason, the international cell phone is becoming both viable and greatly desired.

In the past people traveling to a foreign land would have to make calls from their hotel or hostel, or in some cases (as in India), from special 'phone offices' that specialized in international calls. However, since cellular phones have become so prominent, it has become natural that people would want to be able to use their phones anywhere that they go. Unfortunately, most mobile phones of the past have been limited in their range, or when offering greater range, change exorbitant prices for such lengthy calls. The natural next step has been the international cell phone.
While an international cell phone may still be a bit more pricey than your standard mobile unit, there are other factors that should be considered when purchasing one. First, is the international cell phone truly that -can it reach anyplace in the world from any other place in the world. This includes places such as Antarctica, Mongolia, and the deep jungles of Africa (because you just never know when you might be going to Mongolia!).
The following example will illustrate the type of service that you may require, and should expect. A few years ago a mountain climber phoned his wife from Mt. Everest. He had called his wife for a truly sad reason, to say goodbye. Evidently a storm front had moved in unexpectedly into the Himalayas and had brought a blizzard that the mountaineer knew would take his life. So, with his international cell phone, he called to his home in the west, over 7,000 miles away and said goodbye to his wife for the last time.
While a sad story, this illustrates the paramount messages that one may need to make, and why an international cell phone is so important. Another similar feature is text messaging. This too, should work from any place on the planet. Similarly, one would hope that email would also be a feature. Of course, you should be able to view any emails on your international cell phone, without the tedious need to hook it up to a computer (as some such phones still require).
Further, in this day and age the internet is an almost indispensable source of weather, news, and other, less topical information. Where feasible, consider purchasing a mobile unit with just this application. This single feature alone will preclude the need from having a computer for many, and therefore pay for itself should your computer needs be limited.
Beyond this, two other features that are popular with most mobile phone users are cameras and blue tooth applications. The first feature goes without saying, whereas the second allows your hands to be free for driving (as it's also illegal in most states and simply unethical to hold a phone while driving), holding groceries, or whatnot.
